Lakhimpur Kheri deaths: HC says son of Union MoS can sway trial, rejects bail

Ashish Mishra, the son of Union minister Ajay Mishra “Teni,” was denied bail on Tuesday by the Allahabad High Court in connection with the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case, which resulted in the deaths of four farmers and a journalist in October of last year.

According to a bench presided over by Justice Krishna Pahal, Ashish is so powerful politically that he might be able to sway the prosecution’s witnesses.

Following the conclusion of the hearing on July 15, the high court’s Lucknow bench had reserved its decision.

The Supreme Court overturned the bail that the Lucknow bench had granted Ashish on February 10 and ordered the high court to hear his appeal after giving the victims a fair chance to present their cases. The high court therefore reheard his bail plea.

Mishra is a co-accused in the murder of four farmers and a journalist on October 3, last year in Tikunia, in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh.

A fast-moving car ran over the farmers and the journalist. An angry mob killed two BJP employees and the driver of a car in the ensuing mayhem, sparking outrage across the country. Teni’s resignation has been urged by the opposition due to the problem.
