North Korean leader Kim Jong Un seems to have left for Russia for a meeting with President Vladimir Putin, according to South Korean broadcaster YTN, citing an unnamed senior government source.
According to the story, Kim appears to be on his way to North Korea’s northeastern border on a special train, with the summit perhaps taking place as early as Tuesday. The meeting could take place on Wednesday, according to the broadcaster.
Kim was anticipated to visit the Far East “in the coming days,” according to Russian news agency Interfax. When contacted via phone, South Korea’s foreign and unification ministries claimed they had no information to share. The National Intelligence Service officials could not be reached for comment.
If confirmed, Kim’s journey will be her first overseas trip in more than four years, and her first since the COVID-19 outbreak. His most recent journey abroad in 2019 was also to Vladivostok, when Kim met with Putin for the first time following the failure of North Korea’s nuclear disarmament discussions with former US President Donald Trump.
