Kejriwal to propose ‘motion of confidence’ in the assembly today

The Aam Aadmi party is all set to propose a’motion of confidence’ in the Delhi assembly on Monday in order to retaliate against the Bhartiya Janta Party. Earlier this month, the BJP was accused of attempting to break away from the AAP by offering positions to their MLAs.

Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi and convener of the AAP, declared in the assembly on Friday that he would introduce a “confidence motion” to show Delhi residents that “the BJP has failed to buy any AAP MLAs” in the city. The BJP has disputed the AAP’s assertions, claiming that instead of replying to inquiries about the excise policy that the CBI is looking into, the Delhi government was engaging in “theatrics” to divert attention.

“It is being said that they (BJP) broke away a number of MLAs. I received phone calls; people asked me if everything was alright. I’d like to bring a confidence motion in the House to show people that not even one went away, that the BJP’s Operation Lotus became ‘Operation Keechad’ here,” Kejriwal said in his speech in the House on Friday.

A “no confidence” resolution is usually introduced in the House by the opposition when it is believed that the ruling party has lost the majority in the House, according to PDT Achary, a former secretary general of the Lok Sabha. Yet, he added, the ruling party is also permitted to introduce a resolution of confidence in the House. “Anytime, the government may introduce a motion of confidence in the House. A no confidence motion is typically introduced when there is uncertainty about the majority of the ruling party in the House. The AAP will easily secure its majority because it now has 62 of the House’s total 70 members.

Arvind Kejriwal will introduce the following motion: This House expresses its confidence in the Council of Ministers, according to the assembly secretariat’s agenda of business.

The special session of the assembly was adjourned on Friday after the chief minister suggested introducing a motion of confidence. According to a Vidhan Sabha bulletin of business, “Taking the sense of the House, it was resolved to prolong the sitting of the House and take up the motion on Monday, August 29th, 2022.”
