Karnal breaks five-year Dengue death record, reports fatalities

The district has witnessed a disturbing surge in dengue-related fatalities, breaking a five-year streak of no deaths from 2018 to 2020. With two fatalities each in 2021 and 2022, the toll has risen to four in 2023, with ten days left in the year.

Tragically, a 23-year-old from the rural precincts of the district succumbed to dengue in a private Delhi hospital about 25 days ago, towards the end of November. Despite this, the district health department was officially notified of the young individual’s demise only in December by the private hospital in Delhi. Following this revelation, a specialized committee conducted an inquiry, attributing the death to dengue and including it in the district’s dengue bulletin. The death toll now stands at four, comprising one woman and three men.

Health authorities have sprung into action, conducting larval inspections in 2,789 households through 160 teams on Wednesday. Of these, larvae were discovered in nine houses, leading to notices being issued to four homeowners by the department. Additionally, among 96 suspect samples, none tested positive for dengue on Wednesday. Out of a total of 15,546 samples analyzed, 560 individuals have been confirmed positive for dengue.

The health department’s vigilance extends to 790,217 households inspected thus far in the district, revealing larvae in 7,247 houses. Notices have been served to 3,973 homeowners as part of the proactive measures taken by the authorities.
