Jaishankar highlights India’s resolute response to security challenges

India’s multifaceted response to contemporary national security challenges, including Chinese intrusions at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan, exemplified by India’s decisive actions in Uri and Balakot, underscores the nation’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and protecting its citizens

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar delivered a comprehensive address at the Pandit Hriday Nath Kunzru Memorial Lectures 2024 held at Jawaharlal Nehru University Convention Centre. Jaishankar’s speech illuminated India’s strategic responses to the dynamic security landscape, emphasizing the gravity of emerging threats and the nation’s proactive measures in countering them.

Addressing the audience, Jaishankar articulated the evolving nature of national security challenges, where traditional confrontations intertwine with contemporary complexities. In this context, he highlighted India’s steadfastness in facing provocations along the LAC, particularly citing instances of Chinese incursions. Additionally, he underscored India’s firm resolve in tackling the persistent menace of cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan, which poses a grave threat to regional stability and peace.

Jaishankar delineated India’s assertive actions in response to such challenges, notably referencing the surgical strike conducted in 2016 against terror outfits in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) following the Uri attack. He further highlighted the Indian Air Force’s retaliatory airstrikes on terrorist camps in Balakot in 2019, following the Pulwama attack that claimed the lives of over 40 Indian soldiers. These operations, he emphasized, demonstrated India’s capability and determination to respond decisively to acts of aggression and terrorism.

Moreover, Jaishankar elucidated India’s strategic vision and proactive measures aimed at enhancing national security. He stressed the importance of bolstering border infrastructure, a long-neglected aspect critical for safeguarding territorial integrity and facilitating effective defense mechanisms. Additionally, Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to regional cooperation initiatives such as the Quad, aimed at ensuring stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region.

Jaishankar also highlighted India’s unwavering commitment to economic self-reliance and political autonomy, asserting the nation’s readiness to confront external pressures and safeguard its interests. He cited India’s independent energy procurement choices, such as sourcing cheaper oil from Russia, as a testament to the nation’s prioritization of domestic welfare amidst international pressures.

In conclusion, Jaishankar’s address underscored India’s proactive and multifaceted approach to contemporary national security challenges. It reaffirmed the nation’s resilience, determination, and strategic acumen in navigating the complexities of the global security landscape while steadfastly safeguarding its sovereignty and promoting regional stability.
