A surprising plot to commit robbery in the State Bank of India, Central Bank, and a jewellery shop in the capital has been uncovered. A tunnel, 100 meters long, was dug from a vegetable market shop to facilitate the planned heist. The timely discovery by the Vidhyadhar Nagar Thana Police thwarted the robbery, and forensic science and dog squad teams are assisting in gathering evidence.
Station House Officer Dilip Khadav explained, “Underneath a vegetable shop in Ambabari, a 100-meter-long tunnel was dug by culprits to execute a robbery on banks and a jewellery shop. The shop in Ambabari Vegetable Market belongs to Sohanlal Dhobi. About six months ago, the shop was rented to four individuals, including Anwar and Salman from Uttar Pradesh, for working on market-related tasks. The suspects provided a false ID, stating their names as Manoj Batik.” The criminals displayed cunning tactics by hiding their activities. They filled the shop and its roof with soil-filled sacks, making it difficult for local traders to notice anything suspicious. When a trader brought a truck filled with potatoes on Tuesday morning, the truck got stuck in the tunnel, revealing the entrance. Once people noticed the tunnel, they alerted the police.
A police team entered the shop where the criminals were hiding, discovering plans and food supplies intended for the robbery. It’s reported that one suspect has been apprehended. LED bulbs have been installed inside the tunnel. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Dinesh Kumar Sharma and Assistant Commissioner of Police Rajesh Jangid are present at the scene.
Local traders from the market revealed that these individuals used to work on digging the tunnel at night, occasionally lighting it up to avoid arousing suspicion. When questioned, they would claim to be working on some construction-related activities.
The rented shop’s owner, Rajesh, son of Sohanlal Dhobi, mentioned that the shop was leased six months ago for a nominal sum of 11,000 rupees. The accused provided fake identification in the name of Manoj, which is fraudulent.
