JAGAN’S BIG PUSH FOR ENGLISH MEDIUM EDUCATION IN COLLEGES

Reiterating the fact that English is no longer a luxury but a necessity, Andhra Pradesh CM Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy is now focusing on bringing English as a medium of instruction in colleges.

Figures prove that around 80% of students in urban areas are enrolled in English-medium institutions, while 15% in Telugu-medium. On the contrary, 72% of students are enrolled in English-medium in rural areas.

The CM said that the introduction of English-medium education at the undergraduate level would enhance the career prospects of students. However, capacity building for faculty and content development will have to be put in place.

The CM has further directed officials to come up with appropriate courses that will help students beginning with the new medium of education. The CM also instructed the officials to print all textbooks in both Telugu and English.

Chief Minister Reddy also held a review meeting with the department of education on the proposed amendment to the AP Private Universities Act, 2016. Under the proposed amendment, the government shall have the authority to earmark 35% of seats as government quota seats to provide equity and access to higher education in private universities. The Chief Minister has also directed the department officials to set high standards for new private universities and that the best standards be set for the conversion of existing colleges into private universities.

It has also been said that there should be a joint certification with 200 colleges around the world and that this practice should continue for the next five years.

Further reviewing the aided colleges and institutions, the government also said that the management of any educational institution should be in public interest and to secure the proper management of the said institution by taking over.

The government is also aiming to bring a major transformation by the use of technology and expediting the process of bringing unlimited internet services to every village.
