Italy signals exit from China’s Belt and Road Initiative at G20 Summit

In a confidential discussion at the recent G20 summit in India, Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni informed Chinese Premier Li Qiang of Italy’s intentions to withdraw from the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) — a signature global infrastructure project of Chinese President Xi Jinping. Italy, one of the prominent members of the G20, had officially become a part of this initiative in 2019.
The divulgence came during a private meeting held on the sidelines of the summit on Saturday, according to an individual well-acquainted with the matter, who opted to remain anonymous. Despite planning the exit from the extensive investment agreement, PM Meloni emphasised her desire to sustain amicable relations with Beijing.
The Belt and Road Initiative, often viewed as a reflection of China’s assertive foreign policy, has been a significant point of contention in Italy’s diplomatic relations, particularly with the US. This prospective departure appears to be a calibrated move, epitomising Italy’s endeavour to finesse its global relations, balancing ties with a formidable trade partner and adherence to strategic alliances.
Over the recent months, the Italian leadership had been grappling with the formidable challenge of articulating this decision to the Chinese administration, amidst fears of potential trade retaliations. Prime Minister Meloni intends to carry forward a delicate dialogue during her scheduled visit to China in the coming months, navigating the precarious waters stirred by China’s ambassador to Italy, who had previously cautioned against adverse repercussions following a possible withdrawal.
With this revelation, Italy has signalled to its allies its firm stance on revisiting and potentially recalibrating a commitment that has proven to be a litmus test for its international relationships.
The global community watches with bated breath as PM Meloni steels herself to forge a path that aims to defend Italy’s sovereign interests while attempting to maintain a cordial diplomatic rapport with China. It remains to be seen how this decisive move will shape the geopolitical landscape in the time to come.
