A heated debate has emerged on social media after a user claimed Uber charges more for iPhone users compared to Android users. The discussion began when a user shared a photo showing two mobile phones with different rates for the same Uber Auto ride.
The photo showed an Uber Auto ride with a ₹290.79 fare on an Android phone, while the same ride cost ₹342.47 on an iPhone. The user, Sudhir, wrote:
“Same pickup point, destination & time but 2 different phones get 2 different rates. It happens with me as I always get higher rates on my Uber as compared to my daughter’s phone. So most of the time, I request her to book my Uber. Does this happen with you also? What is the hack?”
Sudhir’s post has garnered significant attention, with many commenting on their similar experiences.
One user commented, “Yes, that happens with me too. Sometimes the difference is not much, but it can even be more than ₹30-50. Trust technology to play with your wallet.”
Another user joked, “Uber knows, you hardly give her pocket money. So Uber is kind to your daughter.”
While the photo shared by Sudhir was originally posted by entrepreneur Niraali Parekh on LinkedIn, Sudhir clarified he had shared it to highlight a legitimate issue.
Studies suggest that iPhone users tend to spend more on apps, subscriptions, and luxury products compared to Android users. This behavioral difference may prompt companies, including Uber, to set higher prices for iPhone users.
According to Sci-Tech Today, iPhone users spend an average of $12.77 (₹1,087) per app, while Android users spend around $6.19 (₹527) per app. Additionally, in-app purchases for iPhones average $1.07 (₹91), compared to just $0.43 (₹36) for Android users. This difference in spending behavior could potentially influence pricing strategies for different platforms.
While some users believe the difference in pricing is part of Uber’s strategy, others suggest alternatives like Rapido, which is seen as cheaper.
