On the 100th anniversary of his birth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the late Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, a former chief minister of Rajasthan and vice president, and expressed his gratitude for his outstanding leadership and contributions to India’s advancement.
“Today is a very special day – it is the 100th birth anniversary of the respected statesman Shri Bhairon Singh Shekhawat Ji. India will always be grateful to him for his exemplary leadership and efforts towards our nation’s progress,” Modi said on X.
The prime minister also recalled the admiration Shekhawat received from people of all political persuasions. Modi shared his old photos with him and said that he was a person who was well-liked across the political spectrum and by people from all walks of life. Shekhawat is credited with bringing the BJP to prominence in the western state of Rajasthan as the first chief minister of the party there. In 2002, he was chosen to serve as the nation’s vice president.
Personable, friendly and politically astute, Shekhawat enjoyed respect and warmth of politicians across ideological divides and his legacy endures in Rajasthan where assembly polls are scheduled to be held on November 25.
