Heavy rains trigger landslides in north Kashmir many structures damaged

At least six residential houses and 12 cowsheds were partially damaged due to the landslides triggered by rains on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road in the villages of Burnate Uri and Machil in Kupwara.

The landslides also partially damaged orchards in these villages but there was no report of any casualty.

While high altitude areas of the Kashmir Valley including the famous ski resorts of Gulmarg and Pahalgam experienced moderate snowfall over the past one week, incessant rains lashed the plains including Srinagar.

Incessant rains over the past four days in Kashmir have led to a rise in water levels in all the major and minor rivers and tributaries with the Jhelum river crossing the flood deceleration mark at Sangam in Anantnag district on Sunday afternoon.

Triggering flash floods and landslides blocked the strategic Jammu-Srinagar national highway with hundreds of vehicles stranded from last 3 days.

Low-lying areas in Srinagar city and other parts of the Valley are facing waterlogging as higher reaches are threatened by flash floods and mudslides. However, the Meteorological (MeT) department has forecast an improvement in the weather from the afternoon onwards.
