Haryana enhances Asha workers’ benefits, strike’s end near

In a significant move, the Haryana Government has increased retirement benefits for Asha workers to Rs 2 lakh. The announcement came from Chief Minister Manohar Lal following his recent meeting with the workers.

Additionally, their monthly honorarium will see a raise by Rs 2100 from the previous Rs 4 thousand. The government has also indicated its intention to petition the central Government of India for further incentives for the Asha
workers.

State President of Asha Workers, Surekha, highlighted that a 10-point demand was presented to the Chief Minister. While some points remain under central jurisdiction and await discussion, others found consensus.

In light of these advancements, Asha workers signalled a potential end to their ongoing strike. However, they remain committed to their planned march to Delhi on October 30.

This marked the fifth official meeting between the protesting Asha workers and the Chief Minister. A prior meeting, chaired by RK Khullar, Chief Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, sought to address the demands raised by the Asha workers.

Since August 8, approximately 20,000 Asha workers have been on strike, demanding government employee status, a minimum wage of Rs 26 thousand, restoration of previously cut incentives, and more comprehensive retirement benefits, affecting crucial healthcare services in the region.
