The Haryana Assembly’s Budget Session for 2025-26 started on March 7 with Governor Bandaru Dattatreya addressing the House. He spoke about the government’s efforts to uplift the poor and support farmers and athletes. The governor also urged legislators to use their time in the Assembly wisely and focus on public welfare.
After the governor’s speech, the House paid tributes to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Haryana Chief Minister O.P. Chautala, and other notable personalities who passed away since the last session. The House also honoured 21 brave soldiers from Haryana who sacrificed their lives for the nation. Vidhan Sabha Speaker Harvinder Kalyan, Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda, and INLD’s Arjun Chautala read out obituary resolutions.
Former Chief Minister Hooda remembered Dr. Manmohan Singh as a great economist who introduced key reforms. He also recalled how Haryana benefited from various development projects during Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister.
The Assembly will take a break on March 8 and 9 and resume on March 10, when discussions on the Governor’s address will take place. Chief Minister Nayab Saini, who is also the Finance Minister, will present the state budget on March 17. This will be his first budget, and it is expected to be around Rs 1.98 lakh crore, higher than last year’s Rs 1.89 lakh crore presented by former CM Manohar Lal.
Meanwhile, the Congress is attending the session without a Leader of Opposition, as the party has not yet appointed anyone for the role.
With important issues like law and order, unemployment, the drug menace, and rising state debt, the Opposition parties are preparing for heated debates in the session, which will continue until March 28.
