The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday announced an impending weather threat in the Arabian Sea that could develop into a cyclonic storm within the next day. In response to this, Gujarat’s ports have been directed to raise the “Distant Cautionary-1 (DC-1)” signal as a precautionary measure.
Located around 920 km west-southwest of Goa, 1120 km south-southwest of Mumbai, 1160 km south of Porbandar, and 1520 km south of Karachi, the depression is anticipated to intensify into a cyclonic storm and move northward over the east-central and southeast Arabian Sea in the next 24 hours, as per IMD’s statement.
This warning signal, DC-I, indicates that while the port’s local weather might not be immediately affected, ships setting sail could face danger on their voyage due to the brewing depression out at sea.
Fishermen have been particularly warned against venturing into the deep sea. “This warning is for north Gujarat ports. If fishermen are fishing in the deep sea (North or South Gujarat), they should immediately return,” Ahmedabad Met Director Manorama Mohanty urged.
As of now, the IMD has not predicted the cyclonic storm’s landfall on the Gujarat coast. However, they did not rule out the possibility of rainfall in coastal regions and an escalation in wind speeds due to the storm. The storm also has the potential to further intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm.
