Governor Purohit: No more housing dominance in Chandigarh’s development

Banwarilal Purohit, UT Administrator-cum-Governor Punjab, emphasized the need for a balanced approach to development in Chandigarh, stating that the city cannot be excessively burdened with housing projects. During a recent announcement, he affirmed his dedication to the Metro project for Chandigarh while addressing the consideration of housing projects, particularly the Sector 53 Housing Scheme.
Expressing concern over the Excise Policy, Governor Purohit directed UT officials to enhance flexibility and improve upon the existing policy, aiming to prevent financial losses in the upcoming fiscal year 2024-25. He highlighted the importance of a strategic Excise Policy, referencing the non-auction of 18 liquor vends this year, leading to an estimated loss of around Rs 165 crore to the state exchequer. In response to this, liquor contractors approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Governor Purohit asserted that the city’s remaining land should not be exclusively dedicated to housing projects, emphasizing the need for diverse developments beyond residential areas. He clarified that the Sector 53 Housing Project, currently on hold, is under serious consideration, dispelling any notion of abandonment.
