At least 27 individuals died and 134 others were injured when the roof of a popular Santo Domingo nightclub, the capital of the Dominican Republic, collapsed in the early hours of Tuesday morning, authorities confirmed.
The accident happened at the Jet Set nightclub, close to the coastline, and emergency teams hastened to free people who were still thought to be trapped under the wreckage. Juan Manuel Mendez, the leader of the country’s emergency operations center, explained that attempts were being made but declined to indicate how many people could possibly still be within.
Among those killed was Nelsy Cruz, a governor of Monte Cristi province, President Luis Abinader confirmed in a statement. “We regret deeply the tragedy,” he tweeted via X, adding that officials are working round the clock to help the victims. “Our prayers are with the involved families.”
The reason for the collapse is under investigation, and officials have assured a complete inquiry into the structural failure.
