The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has alerted smartphone Users users to a surge in fraudulent calls threatening disconnection of their mobile numbers. TRAI emphasized that it does not engage in blocking or disconnecting any telecom customers’ numbers.

Fraudulent Calls on the Rise

Scammers are contacting smartphone users, falsely claiming that their mobile numbers will be disconnected. TRAI clarified, “Disconnect any calls threatening to disconnect your mobile on behalf of Dept of Telecom/TRAI. We are not making any such calls. Official communications, if any, will be from your mobile operator’s official website/app/authorized stores.”

How to Report Suspicious Calls

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) advises users to report such fraudulent calls through the ‘Chakshu-Report Suspected Fraud Communications’ feature on the Sanchar Saathi portal (www.sancharsaathi.gov.in). Additionally, users can verify the mobile connections registered under their name using the Know Your Mobile Connections feature on the same portal and report any unauthorized connections.

Reporting Cyber Crimes

Victims of cyber-crime or financial fraud can report incidents via the cyber-crime helpline number 1920 or through the portal www.cybercrime.gov.in. This measure aims to curb the growing threat of scams and protect consumers.

Tips to Stay Safe

To safeguard against fraudulent calls, TRAI suggests the following:

  • Caller ID Spoofing: Be aware that numbers can be spoofed; do not rely solely on the name or number displayed.
  • Sense of Urgency: Scammers often create a sense of urgency to pressure quick decisions.
  • Personal Information: Never share personal information like social security numbers, bank details, or passwords over the phone, especially with unsolicited callers.
