Government faces scrutiny over lack of compensation for heatwave victims

The Disaster Relief Minister, Kirori Lal Meena, highlighted the absence of compensation provisions for deaths resulting from heatwaves or severe cold. He emphasized that while severe cold and heatwaves are indeed considered natural disasters, the current regulations do not account for compensation in such cases. However, the Rajasthan High Court has taken proactive measures by directing the government to provide compensation for heatwave-related deaths. Addressing journalists at the Secretariat on Friday, Meena assured that steps would be taken to amend the existing rules. He expressed his intention to request the Chief Minister to draft a letter to the central government, proposing amendments to the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) guidelines. The objective is to ensure that individuals who succumb to heatwaves receive compensation comparable to that provided for other natural disasters, as no such provisions currently exist for heat-related fatalities.

Additionally, Dr. Kirori Lal Meena outlined various measures implemented in response to the severe heat conditions. The timing of the MNREGA program has been adjusted, and payment for work has been streamlined, considering 70 percent completion as equivalent to 100 percent. Night shelters have been established to accommodate those affected by extreme cold, while provisions such as shade, tents, and hydration solutions are being provided to combat dehydration. Meena expressed his intention to discuss these matters with Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma.
