The service road near Gopal Junction, PR-7 Airport Road, managed by GMADA, is currently obstructed by piles of garbage, causing inconvenience to local residents. Astonishingly, GMADA officers claim to be unaware of the situation, attributing the problem to Kharar Council, nearby residents, and shopkeepers who allegedly dispose of waste in the GMADA-controlled area.
Despite VIP City’s ambition to secure the top position in Swachh Survekshan, a dump has emerged approximately 500 meters from Industrial Area 8B, leading towards Mullanpur. Residents fear that if unchecked, this site could transform into a full-fledged garbage dump, jeopardizing both the service road and the surrounding environment.
Residents of Sunny Enclave, along with shopkeepers and commuters, have been observed dumping garbage in the vicinity without repercussions. The daily burning of this waste contributes to air pollution, causing health issues among the locals. Furthermore, garbage collection employees, instead of utilizing designated disposal sites, reportedly dump waste on the slip road, exacerbating the problem.
Multiple complaints from the public seem to have fallen on deaf ears, with GMADA officers allegedly neglecting the issue. Concerned individuals stress the urgent need for action against those responsible for dumping garbage. If left unaddressed, the slip road could soon be overwhelmed by waste, posing a severe health hazard to the community.
When approached, Kharar Parishad EO Manveer Singh Gill assured prompt action upon investigating whether the area falls under council jurisdiction. He pledged to dispatch personnel for cleaning if the council has control over the site. Former council member Sukhdev Singh attributed the garbage to Daun village and claimed to have notified the Panchayat about the issue.
Residents emphasize the imminent risk of disease spreading in the area if immediate measures are not taken to curb garbage dumping. They appeal to relevant department officials to intervene and address the problem promptly. Despite the initial optimism following the construction of PR-7 road, residents express disappointment over the prevailing garbage issue, undermining their aspirations for development in the area.
GMADA officers, when questioned about the garbage situation, engage in finger-pointing, with each department deflecting responsibility onto the other. The blame game has resulted in no concrete actions being taken to prevent further dumping, leaving the residents frustrated and the road impassable.
In response to the escalating situation, Gurjeet Singh, a GMADA representative, stated, “The road closure due to garbage dumping on the slip road has been reported to the GMADA Chief Administrator. The concerned department will be notified to remove the garbage, and awareness campaigns will be initiated to discourage people from dumping waste in the area.”
