Charanjit Singh Atwal, former Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a ceremony led by party national president JP Nadda in Delhi. Atwal, who was born on March 15, 1937, resigned from the primary membership of Akali Dal on April 19. He has previously served as the Deputy Speaker of the 14th Lok Sabha of India from 2004 to 2009, representing the Phillaur constituency of Punjab as a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
Atwal held the position of Speaker of the Punjab Assembly twice during his political career. In a significant development, his son Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal, along with several others from Punjab, also joined the BJP in New Delhi on Sunday.
