Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh was on Thursday evening admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) emergency ward at around 8 pm in Delhi. The doctors’ reasons for admitting him remain unknown, but according to officials, he has indeed been treated at one of the country’s premier medical establishments.
Dr. Singh had a long political career when he was the Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014. He entered the Rajya Sabha in 1991, after being appointed as Finance Minister in the government of then-Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. Singh, India’s first Sikh Prime Minister, represented Assam in the Upper House for five terms before shifting to Rajasthan in 2019. Earlier this year, he retired from the Rajya Sabha, ending his long political journey in the Upper House.
Singh’s leadership and his economic reforms are most admired for taking India through heavy economic transitions. His policies in the 1990s gave a crucial turn to India’s liberalization. Also, he is widely reported for his cool-headed practical approach to governance.
It is a developing story. Updates are awaited on the health of Dr. Singh and additional medical details.
