Employee of gold hallmarking company accused of stealing ornaments worth Rs 72.9 L

The owner of a gold hallmarking company in Parel has filed a complaint with the Kalachowkie police, alleging that one of his employees has absconded with ornaments valued at Rs 72.9 lakh. The accused, identified as Kanharam Jat, a 56-year-old individual from Pali district in Rajasthan, was employed by the company just a month ago. The complaint was lodged on Saturday after it was discovered that Jat had walked away with the jewellery from the company’s locker.
The complainant, in his statement to the police, explained the nature of his company’s work, involving the hallmarking of ornaments sent by various gold-making companies and jewelry shops. After marking the quality, the ornaments are returned to the respective entities. The accused, who initially worked with another company, was hired as a driver by the complainant when his previous workplace closed down.
The company has 14 employees, and as per police officials, after the ornaments are hallmarked, they are stored in the company’s locker on the premises. The workers stay overnight at the company, and everyone is aware of the drawer containing the keys to the locker.
The incident unfolded when, on Saturday morning, delivery boys checking the locker for scheduled deliveries noticed the absence of some jewellery. Subsequent investigation, including a review of CCTV footage, revealed that the stolen ornaments were taken by Kanharam Jat.
Upon trying to contact Jat, it was discovered that his phone was switched off. The complainant’s family was then informed, and the matter was reported to the police. A case under Section 381 (theft by clerk or servant of property in possession of master) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered in response to the incident. Authorities are actively working to apprehend the accused and recover the stolen ornaments.
