Dry spell continues in J&K, possibility of light rain and snow after January 24

The meteorological department has ruled out significant weather activity in Jammu and Kashmir until January 24, despite the presence of two Western Disturbances (WDs) expected next week. A meteorological official stated, “Dry weather is likely to continue till January 24 with feeble WDs approaching on 16th and 20th evening.”
Under the influence of these WDs, generally cloudy weather with light rain and snow over isolated middle and higher reaches is anticipated during the nights of January 16th and 20th. However, the overall weather scenario indicates no significant activity until January 24.
The official further highlighted the possibility of light rain and snow at scattered places from January 25 to 27, with updates expected in the coming days for more clarity.
Meanwhile, freezing weather conditions have returned to the region, with Srinagar recording a low of minus 4.2°C, indicating a drop from the previous night. The meteorological official emphasized that the temperature was 2.1°C below normal for this time of the year in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
Other temperature recordings included Qazigund at minus 3.0°C, Pahalgam at minus 5.5°C, Kokernag at minus 2.2°C, Kupwara at minus 4.0°C, and Gulmarg at minus 1.2°C. Jammu recorded a minimum of 2.5°C, making it the season’s coldest night for the winter capital.
The Kashmir valley is currently experiencing “Chillai-Kalan,” a 40-day harsh winter period that will conclude on January 29. Following this, the region will enter the subsequent phases of winter, including “Chillai-Khurd” from January 30 to February 19 and “Chillai-Bachha” from February 20 to March 1.
