Disruption during Governor’s speech as Congress MLAs protest Farmer’s death

The opening day of the budget session in the Punjab Assembly witnessed chaos as opposition Congress legislators vehemently disrupted Governor Banwarilal Purohit’s speech. The Congress members, led by Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, raised concerns about the recent death of a young protester, Shubhkaran Singh, during Haryana Police action at Khanauri border on February 21.

As Governor Purohit began his address, Warring urged homage to the deceased farmer, emphasizing the need for acknowledgment during the assembly session. Leader of opposition Partap Singh Bajwa criticized the sealing of borders between Punjab and Haryana, accusing the government of failing to protect its farmers.

The Congress members, demanding a discussion on the farmer’s death, rushed to the well of the House, interrupting the governor’s speech. They specifically questioned the zero FIR registered against unnamed police personnel involved in the incident. Governor Purohit, expressing his disappointment at the interruption, requested the opposition to allow the scheduled address. Despite the Speaker’s plea, the Congress members continued their protest, prompting Purohit to reluctantly conclude his speech after reading the first and last lines, citing the unfairness of the situation
