On Monday, Shaikh Rasheed, a former Congress MLA from Malegaon, breathed his last in Nashik at the age of 69. Rasheed, who served two terms representing Malegaon Central in 1999 and 2004, played a pivotal role in breaking the Janata Dal’s three-decade-long dominance in the city’s political landscape. Beyond his legislative contributions, Rasheed also served as the Mayor of Malegaon. His impact extended to the next generation, as his son Shaikh Asif secured a Congress victory in the 2014 elections. However, the family’s political allegiance shifted over time, with Asif recently joining the NCP. Shaikh Rasheed had been grappling with age-related health issues and succumbed to them at a Nashik hospital. His legacy includes significant political achievements and a lasting impact on Malegaon’s political landscape.
