Delhi court takes cognisance of chargesheet filed against Sushil Kumar

A Delhi court on Friday took cognisance on the chargesheet filed by Delhi Police against Olympic medalist wrestler Sushil Kumar and 12 others in the Sagar Dhankar murder case.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Satbir Singh Lamba issued a production warrant against the arrested accused and listed the matter for hearing on 20 August for further hearing.

On 2 August, Delhi Police had filed a chargesheet against Sushil Kumar and 12 others in the Sagar Dhankar murder case. The charge sheet names 13 accused, including Kumar. A total of 15 accused have been arrested in the case and five are on the run. The police said that the brawl at the stadium was the result of a conspiracy hatched by Sushil Kumar, who wanted to re-establish his supremacy among younger wrestlers.

In the chargesheet, the police relied on the oral dying declaration of the deceased, scientific evidence including locations of the accused, CCTV footage, weapons, and vehicles recovered from the spot. The chargesheet mentions the names of 155 prosecution witnesses, including four persons who were injured during the brawl.

On 4 May, Sagar Dhankar, who had competed in the 97-kg Greco-Roman category, was beaten to death. Sushil Kumar and his associates allegedly assaulted Dhankar and two of his friends—Sonu Mahal and Amit Kumar—over a property dispute, at the stadium on the intervening night of 4-5 May.
