Death toll rises to 40 in Sikkim flash floods and 76 people are still missing

An official statement on Tuesday stated that 76 people are still unaccounted for in the disaster-stricken state of Sikkim, where the death toll from the flash floods has risen to 40. As of right now, 4418 people have been evacuated from each of the four affected districts, according to the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority.

“A total number of people were evacuated in Mangan (2705) Gangtok (1025), Pakyong (58) Namchi (630) however there are 40 casualties, with Pakyong facing the most deaths (15),” an official statement said.
SSDMA said that currently, 1852 people are residing in 19 relief camps across four districts in the state.

In response to the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood that crossed the Teesta River Basin in Gangtok on Sunday, the Sikkim government earlier announced that laborers registered under the Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) Welfare Board would receive Rs 10,000 apiece. At the awareness and distribution of distress relief assistance event in Chintan Bhawan in Gangtok, Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay gave checks to over 8,733 laborers affected by the South Lhonak Lake GLOF.
