Cracks developed in at least 10 houses and on the road in Durga Pituri Lane of Bowbazar on Wednesday night.
Residents left their houses in panic in the middle of the night with essentials and took shelter in hotels. They complained that the cracks developed owing to the ongoing metro work.
Local councillor Bishwarup Dey rushed to the spot. “There were few cracks in the afternoon, but they started expanding in the evening. At least 10-12 houses have been affected. There are cracks on the road too,” he said.
Dey lodged a complaint against the Metro authority and claimed that there was no engineer present at the spot.
Police surrounded the area with barricades on Thursday morning and the Metro work has been stopped for the time being.
Metro authorities claim that they have started arrangements to keep the residents in hotels.
On August 31, 2019, about 30 houses collapsed during the digging of a Metro tunnel in Bowbazar.
