Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday congratulated the Punjabi players in the Indian contingent at the Asian games for lifting five gold medals thereby breaking the ice after the 1962 Jakarta Asiad.
In a message, the Chief Minister said that the players from the state are continuing their superb performance in the ongoing Asian games. He said that today Tejinder Pal Singh Toor and Zorawar Singh Sandhu lifted gold medals whereas Harmilan Bains and Rajeshwari Kumari bagged silver medals in the games. Punjab had lifted five gold medals, four silver, and three bronze medals he said that this was the first time after the 1962 Jakarta Asian Games that Punjabi players have bagged five gold medals.
The Chief Minister said that this is not the end as more players from the state are vying for these competitions. Extending good wishes to the players, he expressed hope that these players will bring more laurels to the country. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the state government is already making all-out efforts to promote sports culture in the state.
The Chief Minister also said that due to the strenuous efforts of the state government, the players of the state are bringing laurels for the state in the Asian games. He said that the state government is incentivizing the players with cash awards and other facilities. Bhagwant Singh Mann further said that for the first time in the history of state, players are being given financial assistance to prepare for international events.
