China remains in sweltering heat, red alert issued

Xinjiang and Fujian, including multiple other regions of China, have reordered high temperatures as scorching heatwaves strike the nation.

Reportedly, a yellow alert has been issued by China’s National Observatory in several regions hit by the intense heatwaves. The National Meteorological Centre (NMC) reported that regions including Xinjiang and East Zhejiang have transcended 40 degrees Celsius.

On Saturday afternoon, the high temperature alert was raised from orange to red, which is considered the highest on the four-tier warning system for extreme heat in China.

According to NMC reports, the temperature in Turpan and the Xinjiang region would reach 43.3 degrees Celsius at nearly 4 p.m. on Saturday, according to the Chinese mouthpiece The Global Times.

The secretary-general of the World Meteorological Centre (WMC) issued a warning last week about climate change causing frequent heat waves, adding to the demonstration by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Petteri Taalas said, “In the future, these kinds of heatwaves are going to be normal. We will see stronger extremes. We have pumped so much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that the negative trend will continue for decades. We haven’t been able to reduce our emissions globally.”

He further added, “I hope that this will be a wake-up call for governments and that it will have an impact on voting behaviours in democratic countries.”

The IPCC has stated that European nations will witness  a rise in temperature more than regions.
