Chattisgarh: Man sentenced to life imprisonment for raping disabled girl

A 52-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment and given a Rs 2,000 fine by a fast-track court in Sakti on Wednesday for raping a disabled girl.

Chanuram Nirala was found guilty in the court of Special Judge Yashwant Sarathi of violating sections 450 and sub-section 2 (l) of the IPC.

Special Public Prosecutor Rakesh Mahant said, “The victim has lived with her grandmother since childhood. She is physically and mentally handicapped. She speaks and listens with broken words, but her gestures are understood by her grandmother. Her grandmother works as a cook in a primary school”.
“On September 23, the victim’s grandmother had gone to school to prepare food around 10 a.m. The girl was the only person in the house. When her grandmother came back from school at 2:30 pm, the victim told her entire story: that the accused Chanuram Nirala of the village had forcibly entered the house at around 12 pm and raped her,” Mahant added.

The victim and the villagers filed a complaint. The police then registered a case in accordance with certain sections of the Indian Penal Code. The accused was taken into custody by the courts after being arrested by the police. The charge sheet was handed to the court for trial following the case’s investigation.

“During the trial, the court found him guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment under sub-section 2(l) of Section 376 of the IPC and a fine of Rs 1,000, and 5 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1000 under Section 450 of the IPC,” Mahant added.
