The Municipal Corporation mayoral election is scheduled for Tuesday as per the directives of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. In its decision, the court mandated that the elections would be conducted under the supervision of a presiding officer, with complete security provided to all councilors by Chandigarh Police.
The Corporation office in Sector 17 will be cordoned off, prohibiting the entry of outside vehicles or individuals. The High Court, responding to two petitions related to the mayor’s election, ordered the election to take place on January 30 at 10 am, contrary to the Chandigarh administration’s initial announcement of February 6. According to the Joint Commissioner of Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, as part of the election programme for mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor, and Deputy Mayor, all councillors will convene at 10:00 am on Tuesday, January 30. The election proceedings will unfold in the Assembly Hall of Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, located in the New Deluxe Building, Sector 17.
The Deputy Commissioner of UT Chandigarh has designated a presiding officer to oversee the Corporation’s meeting for the mayoral election. At 10:05 am, the nominated councilor, Anil Masih, will assume the role of presiding officer, followed by the national anthem.
The Presiding Officer will initiate the mayor’s election process, including the voting procedure. Post-vote counting, the Presiding Officer will declare the results for the mayor. Subsequently, the Joint Commissioner will invite the newly elected mayor to assume the position. The election process for the Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor will then follow.
