Centre grants ‘Y’ category security to three Punjab leaders

In Punjab’s political landscape, characterized by deep-rooted rivalries and simmering tensions, the Central government has extended security protection to three influential leaders in the state: Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary, Karamjjit Kaur Chaudhary, and Tajinder Singh Bittu, according to insider sources. Specifically, these leaders have been provided with ‘Y’ category security cover by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), a measure confined to Punjab alone.

This security arrangement follows an order from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), prompted by recent threat assessments conducted by the Intelligence Bureau. The decision is part of a broader strategy to ensure the safety of key political figures amid ongoing political dynamics.

The MHA’s action comes on the heels of developments within the Congress party, particularly the suspension of Phillaur MLA Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary due to alleged anti-party activities. Vikramjit’s dissatisfaction with party decisions, including ticket allocation, led to his resignation from the Punjab Vidhan Sabha’s chief whip position. Concurrently, his mother, Karamjjit Kaur Chaudhary, who had previously contested the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat under the Congress banner unsuccessfully, parted ways with the party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on April 20.

In light of her new political affiliation, she too has been granted ‘Y’ category CRPF security cover in Punjab.
Tajinder Singh Bittu, the third prominent leader in this security arrangement, recently resigned from his position as All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary-in-Charge of Himachal Pradesh and relinquished his primary membership in the Congress party. Bittu officially joined the BJP at the party’s headquarters in Delhi on April 20, a move that was overseen by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and party general secretary Vinod Tawde.
