Central Railway proposes fifth and sixth line project to bolster Mumbai’s rail network

In a bid to alleviate the strain on Mumbai’s overcrowded local train services, the Central Railway has unveiled plans for a new fifth and sixth line between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kurla, to be implemented in two phases. The primary objective of this ambitious project is to streamline the movement of both local and mail/express trains, enhancing efficiency and punctuality across the network.

Key Objectives:
The project aims to enhance local train services by segregating the movement of local and long-distance trains.

Scope:
Construction of a new fifth and sixth line between CSMT and Kurla, divided into two phases.

Existing Infrastructure:
The fifth and sixth lines are already operational between Kalyan and LTT. The proposed extension will link Kurla to CSMT.

Anticipated Benefits:
Expanded local train services to accommodate growing demand.
Improved crowd management, particularly during peak hours.
Dedicated tracks for mail/express trains, preventing speed constraints on local routes.
Enhanced punctuality for both local and long-distance trains.

Cost Estimate: Approximately Rs 920 crore (based on 2016 projections).

Current Status:
Land acquisition is underway, with plans for the demolition of the Sion bridge post the conclusion of 10th and 12th board exams. Elevated track construction is in progress at Kurla for the harbour link. Platform construction has commenced on the west side. The ground-level track of the harbour line will be converted into the fifth and sixth lines upon completion of the elevated track segment.

According to Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of the Central Railway, the suburban corridor of Mumbai is among the busiest rail networks in the country. The fifth and sixth line project is envisioned to alleviate congestion and enhance the capacity to operate both suburban and long-distance trains with greater punctuality. With a headway of 3-4 minutes between trains and the operation of long-distance services, the project holds promise for significant improvements in Mumbai’s rail infrastructure.
