CBI lodges FIR, takes up probe in Hathras case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday has taken over the investigation into the alleged gang rape-murder of a 19-year-old Dalit woman in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh on September 14.

The agency has registered a case under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections related to gangrape and murder. The case was earlier registered at Chandpa Police Station, in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh.

The CBI registered the case on a complaint of the victim’s brother who alleged that an accused had tried to strangulate her sister in a millet field on September 14.

“The complainant had alleged that on 14.09.2020, the accused tried to strangulate his sister in the millet field. The case has been registered by CBI on the request of Uttar Pradesh Government and further Notification from Government of India,” CBI Spokesperson RK Gaur said.

The case was earlier probed by the Uttar Pradesh Police. The agency took over the case following the request by the Uttar Pradesh government and further notification from the central government.
The CBI said that it has constituted a special team to probe the case, which led to the widespread criticism of the UP government after the victim was hurriedly cremated by Hathras police on September 30.

The 19-year-old woman died of severe assault injuries at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on September 29. She was allegedly gang-raped on September 14 by four upper-caste men.
