Cabinet Approves Overhaul of Education System with New Education Policy After 34 Years

In a significant move, the cabinet has given the green signal to the New Education Policy, marking a transformative change in the education landscape after 34 years. The revamped policy introduces a structured and inclusive framework, encompassing fundamental, preparatory, middle, and secondary education, with notable features as follows:

5 Years Fundamental Education:

  1. Nursery at 4 Years
  2. Jr KG at 5 Years
  3. Sr KG at 6 Years
  4. Std 1st at 7 Years
  5. Std 2nd at 8 Years

3 Years Preparatory Education: 6. Std 3rd at 9 Years

  1. Std 4th at 10 Years
  2. Std 5th at 11 Years

3 Years Middle Education: 9. Std 6th at 12 Years

  1. Std 7th at 13 Years
  2. Std 8th at 14 Years

4 Years Secondary Education: 12. Std 9th at 15 Years

  1. Std SSC at 16 Years
  2. Std FYJC at 17 Years
  3. STD SYJC at 18 Years

Special and Important Provisions:

  • Board exams will be conducted only in the 12th class; MPhil programs will be discontinued, and college degrees will span 3 to 4 years.
  • The 10th board examination is eliminated, with students up to the 5th standard receiving instruction in their mother tongue, local language, and national language.
  • Only a 12th board exam will be mandatory, with examinations conducted in semesters from 9th to 12th grade using the 5+3+3+4 formula.
  • College degrees will be of 3 and 4 years, with students opting for higher education pursuing a 4-year degree. A 3-year degree is available for those not seeking higher education.
  • MPhil programs are discontinued, and MA students can pursue a PhD directly.
  • No board exams in the 10th standard, allowing students to pursue other courses in between.
  • Reforms in higher education include graded autonomy, e-courses in regional languages, virtual labs, and the establishment of the National Educational Scientific Forum (NETF).
  • Common rules apply to all institutions, whether government, private, or deemed.

This comprehensive overhaul aims to create a more flexible and inclusive education system, aligning with global standards and fostering holistic development for students across various stages of learning.
