Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra: Jorhat Police Files Case for Route Deviation

The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, led by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, faced a setback as the Jorhat Police registered a case against several individuals associated with the Yatra for alleged deviation from the originally planned route. Jorhat Superintendent of Police Mohan Lal Meena, addressing reporters, stated that the case was filed after taking suo motu cognizance of the route deviation.

The Yatra, which rolled into Assam on Thursday, saw Rahul Gandhi crossing the Brahmaputra river by boat on the sixth day of the journey, en route to Majuli, an island in Assam. The Congress party shared an image of Rahul accompanied by party leaders and workers during the boat ride.

Accusing the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led BJP government in Assam of hindering the Yatra’s success, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh claimed, “The state government is making all efforts to ensure that the Bharat Jodo Yatra is not a success here.” He expressed confidence that the people of Assam, including youth and women, would heed Rahul Gandhi’s message.

Rahul Gandhi, addressing party workers in Sivasagar district, criticized the Assam government, alleging it to be “the most corrupt government” in the country. He accused the BJP and RSS of spreading hatred and looting public funds.

In response, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma refuted claims of intentionally clashing with the Yatra, stating that the government had announced the dates for welfare scheme form distribution well before knowing Rahul’s schedule. Sarma clarified that the Yatra’s dates coincided with the pre-planned welfare dates, asserting that the government did not intend any interference. The controversy surrounding the route deviation and political sparring adds tension to the ongoing Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam.
