In the main trailer of Barbie, Margot Robbie’s Barbie and Ryan Gosling’s Ken face some crisis outside the borders of their lavish pink world. In the trailer, everything seems to be fine until isn’t. It opens with Barbie and Ken’s flirtish conversation about a party with synchronised choreography.
The fantasy world comes to a screeching halt when Robbie’s character interrupts her own party to ask the other Barbies and Kens: “Do you guys ever think about dying?” From that moment on, Barbie begins to have some weird experiences in Barbie Land, and things come to a head when her pointed feet go flat.
She eventually learns from Kate McKinnon’s Barbie that she’ll need to travel to the real world or she can choose to return to her old life. She chooses to remain in Barbie land….but that’s actually not an option.
On her way, she realizes that Ryan Gosling’s Ken is a Stowaway. Together, they stir up some trouble in the real world as the CEO of Mattel tries to get them back to Barbie Land.
Written and directed by Greta Gerwig, Barbie will hit theatres on July 21. To note, it’s the first major film production during Mattel’s current corporate era under CEO Ynon Kreiz.
