Information and Broadcasting Minister of Bangladesh, Dr. Hasan Mahomood, was in Kolkata for the inauguration of the Bangladesh Film Festival. Journalists in Kolkata asked him about the violence in Bangladesh during the recently held Parliamentary Bye-election, where an opposition candidate was manhandled. Most diplomats from Western countries issued a joint statement condemning the violence. When the journalists asked about it, the minister replied that it was an exaggeration of the fact. The Government of Bangladesh has taken every step to prevent the violence. Despite that, when it happened, PM Sk Hasina ordered police action against the culprits, some of whom were from the ruling Awami league. He compared the action taken by the Sk Hasina Government with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee.
