Attack on Bharat Jodo Yatra in Tripura, 5 injured; case filed

During the Congress’s state-level Bharat Jodo Yatra in Tripura on Friday, an attack left at least five Congress leaders hurt, according to the police.

Stones were thrown at Congress workers as they marched in South Tripura, according to the police, during the attack.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s supporters, according to the Congress, are responsible for the assault.

The Tripura Congress has begun to increase their mass contact through the “Tripura Bachao Yatra” as part of the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra in preparation for the February 2019 Assembly elections.

Following the incident, the Congress and the BJP each filed a separate case, accusing the other of carrying out the attack.

“As per our report, five were injured and a few vehicles were vandalised. No arrest has been made so far. Our investigation is on,” said assistant inspector general of police Jyotisman Daschaudhuri.

According to Congress, 29 of their party activists were also injured in the attack by alleged BJP-backed goons in three locations during the ‘Bharat Jodo Tripura Bachao Yatra’.

“We organised our procession after taking permission from the police but they failed to give us protection. We are continuing our procession even today (on Saturday). So far, our procession is peaceful,” said Congress leader Anish Kumar Saha.

The BJP has not responded to the situation in any way.

In the conflict between the BJP and the Communist Party of India (CPI-M) that took place in the Khowai district three days ago, roughly 18 people from both parties were hurt. A group of BJP activists allegedly attempted to sabotage a CPI rally, which led to the altercation.
