In ongoing effort against smuggling, the Assam Rifles seized 100 bags of areca nuts, each weighing 80 kg, valued at Rs 56 lakh and totaling 8000 kilograms, in Ruantlang, Champhai district, according to officials on Saturday.
An official statement revealed that, following precise information, a joint operation was conducted by the Assam Rifles and the Customs Preventive Force in Champhai on Friday. The entire batch of areca nuts was subsequently turned over to the Customs Preventive Force in Champhai for further legal action.
The persistent smuggling of contraband items remains a significant concern for Mizoram. The Assam Rifles, aptly known as the ‘Sentinels of Northeast’, persist in their anti-smuggling campaigns and have intensified their operations to apprehend the masterminds behind contraband trafficking in Mizoram.
The previous day, the Assam Rifles carried out two distinct operations in Aizawl and Hnahlan, Mizoram, seizing heroin valued at Rs 11 crore. Additionally, the operation led to the detention of two Myanmar nationals, aged 50 and 53.
