Andrij Parekh makes India proud at Emmys 2020

Director Andrij Parekh, the Indian connect in the Emmys 2020 winner roster, has dedicated his award to all people of colour. Parekh, who is of Indian-Ukrainian descent, won an Emmy for directing the “Hunting” episode of drama series “Succession”, one of the big winners at the gala this year. An acclaimed cinematographer for 20 years, the “Succession” job incidentally marked his directorial debut. “I am deeply honoured and humbled by this award. This distinction has been bestowed upon me on my birthday. So, thank you for the gift,” Parekh said while starting his acceptance speech, going on to thank the cast and crew of the show. “The show has been such a professional dream starting as a cinematographer, and now this… I want to thank my beautiful wife and daughter who put up with my artistic pursuits, brother and my mom and dad,” he added. “To those who don’t look like their classmates and are defined as outsiders, as hyphenated Americans and not simply just Americans. This is proof that you belong and this Emmy is ours,” he added Parekh’s various assignment im the past include “Half Nelson”, “Sugar”, “Blue Valentine”, “The Zookeeper’s Wife”, “13 Reasons Why”, “Madame Bovary” and “Show Me A Hero”. 

‘Schitt’s Creek’, ‘Succession’, ‘Watchmen’ win big

Canadian family comedy, Schitt’s Creek, made history at the 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards as it took home the majority of awards at the ceremony, which was held virtually amid the coronavirus pandemic. Brian Cox’s “Succession” and the superhero series “Watchmen” also emerged big winners. “Schitt’s Creek” won nine awards, going on to break the Emmys record for most wins in a single season for a comedy. It won the Best Comedy Series, with its stars Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy being named as the Best Comedy Actress and Actor respectively. Daniel Levy and Annie Murphy won the Best Supporting Actor and Actress trophies. The comedy series is created by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, and follows the wealthy Rose family, who are forced to move to a small motel after losing their fortune. The show also won a trophy for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for Andrew Cividino and Daniel Levy, with the latter also winning outstanding writing for the finale episode “Happy Ending”. 

Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox have mini ‘Friends’ reunion

Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow and Courteney Cox united for a mini reunion to celebrate their hugely popular sitcom, Friends, during a video call with host Jimmy Kimmel at the virtual Emmy award gala. While Aniston was on video call with Kimmel, Cox joined in. «Of course I›m here. We live together,» she said. «Yeah, we›ve been roommates since 1994, Jimmy,» Aniston added, referring to the year when the hit sitcom premiered. Aniston›s Rachel Green and Cox›s Monica Geller were roommates in the story for the longest time. Soon, Kudrow also entered the picture, following which Kimmel wondered if they don›t live with their own families. «Where else would I live?,» Kudrow said. Soon, even Jason Bateman entered the call and Aniston quipped that they have allowed him to stay with them until he «goes to college». It›s been 25 years since «Friends» found its way to the small screen, and started its journey to create history. 

Zendaya makes history

Actress Zendaya has made history by becoming the youngest actress to win an Emmy in the Drama Lead Actress category. She won the trophy for her role in “Euphoria”. The 24-year-old overcame a strong group of nominees—Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), “Killing Eve” stars Jodie Comer, Sandra Oh, Olivia Colman (“The Crown”), and Laura Linney (“Ozark”), to win the honour.
