Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy launched the YSR Cheyutha scheme on Wednesday. The initiative aims at making women economically empowered and self-reliant.
As part of the scheme, close to 23 lakh women belonging to SC, ST, OBC and other minority groups, in the age group of 45 to 60 years, will receive Rs 18,750 per annum for a period of four years, aggregating to Rs 75,000. The government will spend Rs 4,687 crore annually for the scheme.
While affirming that it was his good fortune to launch the scheme, Jagan said that this was a response to the woes of the many women he had listened to during his 3,648 km padayatra. The women had said that no government scheme applies to the age group of 45 to 60 years, which is a crucial phase in the life of a woman running a family.
Jagan further said, “When we thought of pensions for people from the age of 45 years and above, detractors ridiculed the concept.
After careful consideration, we have decided to provide a financial incentive to women of that age group and also open up opportunities for entrepreneurship according to their convenience.” He further explained, “The Cheyutha (assistance) will continue for four years. The money is going to be transferred to the accounts of the women.”
