Amritpal Singh’s associates remanded to custody

Amritsar’s Baba Bakala court witnessed a heavy police presence on Thursday as seven associates of ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh were brought before the court. They were arrested in connection with an FIR registered regarding the Ajnala incident last month. Amritpal Singh and his supporters had stormed a police station carrying swords and guns, demanding the release of one of his aides Lovepreet Singh.
Senior Superintendent of Police Rural Amritsar Zone, Satinder Singh, revealed that an FIR under Arms Act has been registered against them and Amritpal Singh is the main accused. Six 12-bore weapons were recovered from them, all of which were found to be illegal. The seven associates were remanded to police custody until March 23.
Punjab Police launched an operation against Amritpal Singh and his aides on March 18, almost three weeks after the Ajnala incident. The radical leader was declared a “fugitive” by Jalandhar Police Commissioner Kuldeep Singh Chahal. The police have arrested a total of 154 people in this operation.
During the Ajnala incident, thousands of Amritpal Singh’s supporters stormed the police station, threatening the police with dire consequences if they did not release Lovepreet Toofan. Lovepreet Toofan was arrested for allegedly assaulting and abducting a man. The police had clashed with Amritpal Singh’s supporters who were carrying high-calibre firearms and swords.
The police have been taking strict action against the supporters of Amritpal Singh, who is known for his radical views. The situation in the area remains tense as the police continue their operation against Amritpal Singh and his associates.
