Amid freezing temperatures, air sorties managing Jal Jeevan Mission in remote villages of Leh

Out of 60 villages, 12 villages of Leh got 100 percent tap connections under Jal Jeevan Mission Dipling Village of Leh, a remote village where there is no road connectivity, local administration is using air sorties to deliver Jal Jeevan Mission Material such as water pipes, etc. Under this JJM, now 5425 households got 100 percent of tap connections against 24767 households. JJM has covered 12 villages comprising remote villages like Dipling with no road connectivity. One such village is Umla whose residents had been traveling long distances to have access to water for ages and now have taps that are available at their doorsteps and with 100 percent water supply.

To achieve timely completion of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), LAHDC and District Administration Leh started delivering JJM material through air sorties to remote areas of the district, such as Dipling. Dipling comes under Singay Lalok block and is still unconnected through road connectivity.

Despite connectivity challenges, equipment and material like High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipes for Jal Jeevan Mission were delivered in Dipling village through air sorties. This step has ensured timely completion of JJM works in the village as sending material was a huge challenge. The deadline for completion of the Jal Jeevan Mission in UT Ladakh is 15th August 2022.

Along with Leh, the Target of Ladakh to have a 100 percent tap connection with water supply is 44076 households. At the start of the program, there was 3.21% coverage only, and currently, it is 23.31%. Leh – 22% coverage, Kargil- 25%, Leh has 12 villages and 3 panchayats with 100 % coverage, Kargil – 3 villages.

While having one on one with The Daily Guardian District Magistrate Shrikant Suse exhorts, “We are using air sorties to send material to inaccessible areas like Dipling village. Despite subzero-like -12 degree temperatures currently, there is work going on in all villages of Ladakh like Drass, Korzok, Chushul, etc. Special attention is given to villages along the Line of actual control to cover on priority.” Adding further Suse says, “Recently Man Pangong village got connections which are not far from LAC. There is massive use of solar pumps along with normal power sources in implementing water schemes in these areas. Recently one village called Mudh near to LAC was covered 100%. In that scheme, the largest capacity solar pumps have been used than any drinking water scheme in Leh. To make Ladakh carbon neutral, we extensively are using solar energy. There has been greater participation by pani Samiti established in all villages in the program with the support of commissioner secretary A K Sahu and both DMs.”
