The Delhi High Court on Friday took suo motu cognisance of the violation of Covid-19 protocols in markets across the national capital after restrictions were eased earlier this week. “We have paid a huge price in the second wave. We don’t know if there is any household which has not suffered in the second wave, closely or remotely,” the court said.
The Delhi High Court took note of photographs sent to one of the HC judges by a doctor at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) showing street vendors in Delhi violating the Covid-19 protocols in markets.
The court observed that such breaches will only hasten the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic. There is a need for stricter measures in the national capital to prevent further spread of Covid-19 infection, it added.
The Delhi High court also issued a notice to the Centre and the Delhi government, asking them to file a status report.
On Sunday while addressing a press conference Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had stated while announcing the Unlock 3.0 guidelines that the curbs are currently being eased on a trial basis for a week.
“We will observe this for one week. If cases increase, stricter restrictions will have to be reimposed, otherwise, it will be continued,” he had said.
The Delhi government imposed a lockdown in the national capital from 19 April at the peak of the second wave of Covid-19. After a continuous decline in daily coronavirus cases, Kejriwal had announced the unlocking process from 31 May in a phased manner.
