Guwahati: After claiming conquest and forming alliance government with the UPPL in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, the BJP is now hawk-eyed on the Tiwa battle turf, claiming an absolute majority.
Amidst tight security arrangements and with strict adherence to Covid protocols, the voting for Tiwa Autonomous Council election underwent in the 36 council constituencies in parts of Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai and Kamrup (Metro) district in Assam on Thursday. A total of 124 candidates are in the fray in the council elections and 3,08,409 voters will decide the fate of these candidates in ballot papers. As per information from the Assam State Election Commission, polling in as many as 410 polling booths began at 7.30 am on Thursday. Of the total 187 polling stations, 119 have been earmarked as sensitive and as many as five companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed in the district to ensure peaceful and fair election discourse. The BJP is contesting 35 council seats, while its ally AGP is contesting one seat. Meanwhile, the Congress has also exuded confidence by fielding candidates in all 36 seats of the council elections.
