Above normal monsoon in India this year, says IMD

According to the India Meteorological Department, India is expected to have an above normal monsoon, with cumulative rainfall forecast at 106% of the long-term average of 87 cm on Monday.

According to the IMD, a four-month season’s average or nominal rainfall falls between 96% and 104% of the 50-year average of 87 cm (35 inches).

In a post on X, the weather agency stated, “IMD predicts 2024 Southwest monsoon season (June to September) rainfall over the country as a whole to be above normal (>104% of the Long Period Average (LPA). Seasonal rainfall is likely to be 106% of LPA with a model error of ± 5%. LPA of monsoon rainfall (1971- 2020) is 87 cm,”

According to the IMD, La Nina conditions—which are linked to a successful Indian monsoon—are anticipated to arrive by August or September.

At a news conference, Dr. M. Ravichandran, secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, stated. “Data from 1951 to 2023 shows India experienced above-normal monsoon rainfall on 9 occasions when La Nina followed El Nino event. Above-normal rainfall expected in most parts of country, except in some regions of northwest, east and northern states,”
