80 years of Quit India Movement, PM tweets

On the occasion of the Quit India movement’s anniversary, PM Narendra Modi took to Twitter on Tuesday to honour those who took part in it. He said that the movement united members of various societal groups. A photo of Mahatma Gandhi from the beginning of the Quit India struggle was also uploaded by PM Modi.

The PM tweeted, “Remembering all those who took part in the Quit India Movement under Bapu’s leadership and strengthened our freedom struggle.”

The Quit India movement was started on August 8, 1942, in the Bombay Session under the direction of Mahatma Gandhi. To end British rule in India was the movement’s main goal. In his address urging people to leave India, delivered in Bombay, Gandhi used the maxim “do or die.” Even though the then-British government attempted to stifle the movement by imprisoning key Congressmen, there was fierce opposition that ensued.

The socialist leader, Jayaprakash Narayan, said that “August 9 has become a flaming symbol of our national revolution,” and PM Modi echoed the same sentiment.

Taking to Twitter, PM said, “Inspired by Bapu, the Quit India Movement witnessed remarkable participation from people across all sections of society, including greats like JP and Dr. Lohia.”

The prime minister also used Jayaprakash Narayan’s famous quote, “August 9 has become a flaming symbol of our national revolution,” in his remarks.
