44 ASSAM RIFLES’ AZADI KA AMRUT, DANDI SATYAGRAH

To commemorate the 91st anniversary of DANDI MARCH led by Mahatma Gandhi and to mark 75 years of Indian Independence, 44 Assam Rifles under the aegis of 22 Sect Assam Rifles (AR)/ Inspector General Assam Rifles (IGAR)-E celebrated AZADI KA AMRUT mahotsav at Tamenglong district headquarters. The event included a five km walkathon from Jadonang park of Tamenglong town towards Old Tamenglong village junction and back. 

The Commandant of Tamenglong battalion led the general public of the town to pay floral tributes to the freedom fighters and remembered the struggle and sacrifices of Mahatma Gandhi, Rani Gaidinliu, Haipou Jadonag and other national heros at the grand function. The event saw large number of Civil Adm, CRPF, CSOs, NGO, & Civilians turn up to be part of this unique tribute to great national freedom fighters. The event culminated with favourite bhajans of father of the nation and patriotic songs for the attendees. Patrioritic songs filled the environment with enthusiasm. The aim of the event was to foster patriotism among the local youths and to pay homage to the legendary freedom fighters from the soil of Manipur. The freedom struggles and contributions of Rani Gaidinliu and Haipou Jadonang were highlighted to the generation next. Rani Maa was an exponent of Haipou Jadonang who launched religious movement to reform. The commandant speaking on the occasion urged the youth to channelise their energy in upliftment of the society and contribute towards nation building and development. He also motivated the gathered youth for joining security forces & asked them to preserve, protect and enrich the hard earned freedom to promote a sense of national integration and commitment. The commandant also intimated them the various development efforts being carried out by the unit for the locals. The unit has been promoting Fit India campaign by incorporating such events for youth of the area.

Dandi march also called as Salt Satyagrah was a major non-violent protest action in India led by Mahatma Gandhi from 12 Mar till 5 Apr 1930 as a direct action campaign of tax resistance and protest against British salt monopoly which gathered widespread support among the Indian populace and considerable worldwide attention. The Indian Independance movement finally broke the British Raj salt law on reaching Dandi after covering a distance of 240 miles by hundreds of local populace. Zeliangrong Naga community which later became political struggle to uproot British colonialism from Manipur and Naga areas. Rani Gaidinliu spread the message of Gandhiji in Manipur and identified the Naga struggle for freedom with the wider Independence movement. She emerged as an active leader of British resistance before she was arrested in 1932 by British authorities.
